Water Corp Alkomos declination

06/11/2023

ECW Group successfully conducted an extensive test pitting program for the Water Corporation's Alkimos to Wanneroo desalination pipeline project. The work presented significant geological and environmental challenges that tested both our technical expertise and operational resilience.

The primary challenge stemmed from Perth's notoriously unstable sands, which posed constant difficulties for excavations at depth. Our crew was tasked with reaching depths of 5 meters across multiple locations—a substantial undertaking given the soil conditions. During the warmer months, persistent pit collapses created serious safety concerns, requiring continuous vigilance and adaptive work practices to protect personnel and maintain project momentum.

Rather than relying on conventional methods, our team trialled innovative excavation techniques at each location. These experimental approaches yielded unexpected positive results, allowing us to overcome the geological constraints and reach the required depths safely and efficiently. This demonstrates ECW Group's commitment to problem-solving and continuous improvement in challenging ground conditions.

The project faced an unforeseen disruption when devastating bushfires swept through Perth suburbs in the surrounding areas. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) determined the fires were ignited by ground fire, which combined with strong winds and temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius, resulted in the destruction of nearly 5,000 acres of land. Despite this major disruption, our team returned to site and successfully completed the remaining test pitting work without incident.

This project exemplifies ECW Group's capability to deliver critical infrastructure support in challenging environmental conditions while maintaining unwavering safety standards.
